China Shipping Costs: What Makes Up the Total Price

China Shipping Costs: What Makes Up the Total Price

The cost of shipping from China covers eight components, not just the rate per kg. See how the full calculation works and where you can reduce expenses.

TL;DR: The total cost of shipping from China consists of eight components: domestic pickup in China, supplier payment, warehouse reception and operations, cargo inspection, packaging, international freight, insurance, and last-mile delivery. The per-kilogram freight rate is only one of these elements.

Why the per-kilogram rate does not equal the total shipment cost

Comparing logistics providers based solely on the freight rate per kilogram is one of the most common planning mistakes in import. The rate covers a single leg: international transportation. Before that leg, goods need to be collected from the factory, transported to the consolidation warehouse, received, counted, inspected, and packed. After it - cleared through customs, delivered to the destination city, and unloaded.

When only the freight rate appears in a quote, the remaining costs do not disappear. They show up later in the invoice, or they stay hidden until delivery - as defects, shortages, or wrong items that were never documented at the origin warehouse.

The eight cost components of a shipment from China

Domestic pickup in China. Each supplier pickup is billed as a separate line. The cost is calculated at the actual carrier rate or as a surcharge of 20-50 USD per shipment, depending on the distance to Guangzhou, the cargo weight, and the number of collection addresses.

Supplier payment. The invoice amount, payment method, and exchange rate on the transfer date. This component is fixed at the moment of payment.

Warehouse reception and operations. Counting, measuring, and position-by-position verification at DPC's Guangzhou warehouse. Storage is free of charge: there is no concept of a "free storage period" - goods are held at no cost until the shipment is consolidated and dispatched.

Cargo inspection. The inspection depth is selected for each shipment: counting, visual check, random sampling, or a custom checklist provided by the client. For a new supplier, a thorough inspection records any discrepancies before departure rather than after arrival.

Packaging and palletising. The packaging scheme is chosen after measurement and depends on the weight per unit, cargo type, and number of transshipments en route.

Packaging type Price When applied
Pallet in crate 30 USD/m³ Fragile or high-value cargo, multiple transshipments
Bag and tape 5 USD/unit Basic moisture and scuff protection for cartons
Corner board with bag 6 USD/unit Soft-cornered boxes, stacking in trucks
Wooden crate (small) 15-25 USD Heavy small items: electronics, glass, ceramics

For large cartons with rigid walls, palletising can be omitted to reduce this cost line.

International freight. Depends on the destination, mode of transport, weight, volume, cargo density, and commodity category. On road routes, the calculation uses a density threshold of 100 kg/m³: shipments denser than this are billed by actual weight. Density is measured after reception at the Guangzhou warehouse, not based on factory-provided data. Freight rates changed more than 10 times in 2026, so each quote is valid for 7 days.

Cargo insurance. Mandatory coverage is included with every shipment - it is not an optional add-on. For the Kazakhstan road route, coverage is 5 USD per kg. For Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Europe, the terms are confirmed at the time of quotation.

Documentation and last-mile delivery. Import scheme, labelling, destination city, delivery address type, and unloading conditions. The cost depends on the specific route and import structure.

How shipment weight affects the cost per kilogram

DPC accepts shipments from 50 kg. At this minimum, fixed costs - reception, documentation, and pickup - are spread across a small number of kilograms, which raises the per-kg cost.

From 150 kg onward, fixed costs typically have a smaller impact on the cost per kilogram and the rate becomes more stable. If a single supplier order falls below this threshold, adding a second supplier and consolidating both into one shipment lowers the per-unit cost.

What happens when cargo density is low

On road routes, the density threshold is 100 kg/m³. A shipment with density below this level is calculated by volume rather than actual weight - the invoice grows even though the physical weight has not changed.

After reception and measurement, DPC calculates the shipment density and, for light cargo, proposes repackaging with a side-by-side comparison of the before and after calculations. Transit times remain unchanged.

For air express, volumetric weight is calculated using the carrier's coefficient for the specific route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a cost breakdown before the cargo is dispatched? Yes. DPC shows each cost component as a separate line before the shipment begins. The quote is valid for 7 days because freight rates change regularly. Warehouse and packaging operation costs are published in advance and do not depend on route load.

Is warehouse storage in Guangzhou included in the price? Storage is free of charge with no time limit for regular clients. There is no paid storage and no concept of a "free storage period" - cargo is held until the shipment is ready to be consolidated.

What happens if my cargo turns out to be low-density? After measurement at the warehouse, DPC calculates the density and proposes repackaging if it would reduce the freight cost. The revised calculation is shared before any decision is made.

Is cargo insurance mandatory or optional? Mandatory coverage is included with every shipment on all routes - it is not a separate service. For the Kazakhstan road route the coverage is 5 USD per kg; for all other destinations the terms are confirmed at quotation.

Warehouse and packaging prices are current as of 20.08.2026. Freight rates are valid for 7 days from the date of quotation.
